El Karama Eco lodge

El Karama is situated centrally within Laikipia District, in the 40,000 square km Ewaso ecosystem that boasts more diversity of fauna and flora than any other region in Kenya.

El Karama Eco Lodge is based on a private 14,000 acre ranch where conservation is a primary concern. We offer an intimate wilderness experience for the wildlife connoisseur.

El Karama bandas offer accommodation for up to 20 people. The choice of accommodation ranges from stone/canvas ‘bandas’ and slightly larger cottages for couples with children or small groups.
The bandas are situated at a safe distance from the rivers edge and look across to a salt lick where wildlife often congregate in the early morning and evening. Each banda has its own veranda for reading and star gazing. All guests are provided with storm lanterns to compliment the fixed eco-friendly LED lighting. There is a catered and self-catered option available to guests.

Accommodation Summary

Rooms

The Bandas

All the bandas have a spacious central room with a double bed (one is a twin), covering in mozzie nets, a seating area with a small table for writing, furniture for storing/hanging clothes and an ensuite bathroom with a large stone bath (and overhead shower) that you can sink into after a long day out. Bandas have their own verandas for reading and star gazing. All four of them look over onto the river.

The Rondavel

This cottage was built with families and small groups in mind. With a large double bed that could fit four, two single beds and sofa, it is ideal for those wanting to stay together. For additional privacy, we’ve built the bathroom a step away. Like the bandas it has a large stone bath and shower with an open window looking directly onto the river – if you’re quiet you may see African Finfoot or Hippo moving down river!

Hobbit House

This cottage is our largest. It has two bedrooms: the master bedroom has a large double bed fit for a king, two tree house floors with single beds for children over 8 years and a living area with a sofa and armchairs.

The second bedroom is smaller with two twin beds and a round glass window for game viewing. Look out for genet cats, they seem to love this part of the lodge! The bathroom is large, with a river-facing bath and a separate shower. There is a lot of additional space around this cottage for kids to run and explore.

Dining areas

We have 2 different dining areas: 1 overlooking the river and 1 overlooking the swimming pool. Both are relaxed information and built with beautiful fallen wood including nilotica and cedar and giant bamboo. Both rooms are open on one side to allow the breeze to flow through and to give guests that intimate Kenyan bush feel!

All our food is fresh, hearty, clean and mostly home grown in our beautiful organic garden here on the property. We can adapt our menus to suit all dietary needs and we also produce kids food and can adjust the timings of meals for family groups. The relaxed, bush home feel translates to our communal eating style. However, we do have the option of offering private meals or separate tables whenever guests prefer this. Our aim is to offer as much flexibility as possible.

swimming pool

Our swimming pool is pioneering in its environmentally responsible technology. It does not use salt or chlorine, but rather a copper based deionising system to kill bacteria. Like our whole lodge this pool is chemical free and runs on 100% solar power. We are the first in Kenya to use this Eco Smarte technology but others are following suit.

A fantastic place to relax in the heat of the day, bird watch as the aloes and acacia trees surrounding the pool attract several varieties of sunbirds and finches, this is one of the most popular places within the lodge for groups, couples and of course families with children!
