Southern Sky Adventures: Kilimanjaro

KilimanjaroMount Kilimanjaro, found in Tanzania, is Africa’s most popular trekking destination, and at 19,336 feet it’s Africa’s highest peak. The trek to the summit takes you through 5 different climactic zones and more than 20,000 people attempt the climb every year. Routes vary in degree of difficulty, traffic and scenic beauty. The least difficult routes include Machame, Shira and Limosho. The longer routes have more difficult hiking but offer more opportunity for acclimatization resulting in less likelihood of altitude sickness and a greater likelihood of reaching the summit.
The New York Times Magazine sent Tom Bissell to climb Kilimanjaro and his video can be viewed here.

One of the most amazing aspects of the mountain in the present day is the accessibility of its peak to climbers with no mountain climbing equipment or real previous experience of scaling such heights. Kilimanjaro is the highest mountain that regular tourists can climb, although it remains a considerable feat.

The breathable oxygen at the top is less than half the amount than is common at sea level, and climbers cover at least forty five miles on nothing but their own two feet over the five days it takes to reach the top and return.
