Day 1: Drakensberg

CHAMPAGNE RESORTGuests are met upon arrival at Johannesburg International Airport. The tour then travels in a south easterly direction to the Drakensberg Mountains-so named by the early Dutch settlers for their resemblance to the ridges of a Dragon’s Back. The steep ridges of the mountains were formed by the headwater erosion of rivers which separate South Africa’s Highveld Plateau from the coastal lowlands. The Champagne resort is situated in the central Drakensberg with sweeping views of the Champagne and Cathkin Peaks. The afternoon is spent at leisure going for a hike or just relaxing in this area of scenic delight.

Day 2: Drakensberg

Breakfast is followed by tee off at the Resort Course. The course is fairly open but with many hazards. The perfectly manicured kikuyu fairways are generously wide and boarded by light rough and many varieties of trees. This is not to say that the course is easy though – the 84 bunkers that line the fairways and guard the bent grass greens will punish misdirected shots. Water hazards are prominent and the course becomes especially tricky in the wetlands. The first is the signature hole of the course, and at six hundred and five yards it is the longest par five in South Africa. The afternoon is spent relaxing.

Day 3: South Coast

SAN LAMEERThe tour makes its way south traversing the midlands en route to the sub tropical South coast where endless golden beaches line the Indian Ocean and many championship courses await. After check in at the hotel and some time for lunch we tee off at the San Lameer Course. Situated in a coastal wetland the course is challenging for virtually each hole is protected by a water hazard. Often ranked as one of South Africa’s top 10 courses, great care has been taken in ensuring the course blends in well with the natural surroundings. Nature lovers are sure to find the course a delight with 195 different indigenous bird species as well as troop of impala that grace the area.

Overnight: San Lameer

Day 4: South Coast

After breakfast a short drive leads to the Southbroom Course. A seafront course with lush vegetation and numerous species of small game and bird life create the perfect backdrop to a great round. The first hole is an excellent start, a tricky par 4 to test tour opening skills, and the short par 3 4th hole will stop you in your tracks. It is the most talked about hole, for it is part of the sand dunes that protect this magnificent coastline and on rare occasions you can watch the dolphins play or a whale basking in the warm Indian Ocean currents. During the afternoon we visit a craft market where some of the finest local artisans display their wares before returning to the overnight destination.

Overnight: San Lameer

Day 5: South Coast

The Wild Coast Sun Golf Course is on the agenda for the day. An interesting and challenging course designed by Robert Trent Jones with a superb setting on the Wild Coast. The course was opened in 1983 and has since been ranked in South Africa’s top 10 on numerous occasions. Among the many fine holes of the course the 12th deserves specific mention as it plays across the valley with one of the most breathtaking views in Africa. During the afternoon we enjoy a horse driven carriage ride or a horseback ride on the spectacular beach before returning to the overnight destination.

Overnight: Zimbali Lodge

Day 6: North Coast

ZIMBALIZimbali is a relatively new course, but has in its short existence establish a reputation as a championship course with magnificent vista’s of the Indian Ocean. Designed by the former South African and British Open golf champion Tom Weiskopf, this course which encompasses links, parkland and coastal vegetation is sure to challenge both novice and experienced players. The afternoon is spent in grand style on this remarkable estate.
