The options available for African safari tours are numerous given the sheer size of the continent’s geography. The distance traveled from Nairobi, Kenya to Cape Town, South Africa is the same as that from New York to Los Angeles. What lies in between is as diverse a landscape, topography and people as your imagination can take you. The East African Rift Valley runs almost the length of this wide expanse and affords prolific game viewing ranging areas from the Masai Mara in Kenya to the Serengeti in Tanzania to the South Luangwa Valley in Zambia through to Kruger Park in South Africa. All of these locations are found at a much higher elevation than would be expected. Despite the wide open savannahs found along the valley often the altitude can be as high as a mile above sea level, the same as that of Denver, Colorado. Such topographical change is not what is usually expected in thinking about African safari tours.

Most of Africa’s large water concentrations emerge along this same rift. Uganda alone offers the source of the Nile, a northeastern boundary to Lake Victoria, waterfalls and whitewater rapids fed by snowcapped mountains while garnering worldwide attention for its only recently redeveloped game reserves teeming with the big cats, elephant, rhino and more while also playing host to a bird watcher’s paradise. Add into the mix the Mountain gorillas seen in the Bwindi Impenetrable Forest and this one country allows for multiple visits. And this is but one stop along the way for the traveler in search of African safari trips.

To follow are considerations for Indian Ocean island getaways as well as Kenya and Tanzanian beach visits along their equatorial coastlines. There is 1,500 miles of sandy shores of Mozambique offering marlin fishing but two miles offshore along with world class scuba diving and swimming with whale sharks. Further south, South Africa’s white sand beaches yield to rolling hills which then rise up to meet the peaks of the Drakensberg Mountain range. Migratory southern right whales and humpbacks dot the coast and can be seen from the stunning surrounds of Cape Town found at the far southern tip of Africa. It is here that most southern African safari trips should end as the pristine beaches surrounded by 3,000 foot Table Mountain offer a base from which to enjoy Winelands which rival Napa, California, first world amenities and a variety of activities to keep anyone engaged for as long as their African safari trips will allow them.
